I hate the violence happening in Minneapolis but I'm not surprised at how amazingly the people there are fighting back. It truly is such a special history with a lot of labor organizing that has happened in recent decades . . . Much love to everyone there!
Bravo Minneapolis! I hope this awakening leads to longer term focused strategies against ICE & CBP of service denial. The structural weakness of the federal invaders is they must depend on the infrastructure of civil society for shelter, food, gas, and transportation. Citizens have the right to deny service. An aroused citizenry can unite to work with businesses and unions to deny hotels, restaurants, fast food, catered, and even access to supermarkets. They can deny refueling. They can deny, ticket, tow, impound vehicles breaking traffic laws. They can pressure rental agencies and fleet leasing companies to refuse service to the people who are harming their employees and customers. They can recognize the power of customers to withhold, boycott businesses which collaborate. This strategy harnesses organizing over a longer period of pressure with effective, if widespread enough, friction to the ease of these rapid invasions and strikes. An invading army must bring its own shelter, food services and supplies, and transportation and fuel at huge complexity and cost. Don’t obey in advance by providing the services they need to oppress you. Solidarity.
The Minnesota general strike is not a general strike as historically understood but it is something new with the potential to be just as transformative.
It is a species of disaster organising where the fight is to protect the very right of workers to exist safely within a given community. This gives mass action new forms of potential legitimacy and grounding. This could spread very quickly.
Is there an actual list of people, their names, that have been taken by ICE? Hearing that 20 people have been 'arrested' really has little meaning to us. The actual names of say five people that have been detained, deported, sent to another country would help all of us engage more affectively. Pictures of them would make a huge difference. Why are they in the United States? How long have they been here? Where did they come from? Do they have family here? Make it real. Make it personal. Contacting the families of these five people for updates as to where they are and what the prognosis of their case is makes them real. Otherwise they are all just a number that our eyes glance over and then forget.
If I were kidnapped by ICE, I would want to believe that my abduction was noticed.
If the title of your article is a national general strike then at least in the first three paragraphs be clear about what you are talking about. We are all familiar with the general history and context. Get to the point.
In addition to the whistle brigades and all of that, we desperately need people to start thinking about mutual aid for a true general strike. If we’re to be out for any length of time at all, communities will need to organize childcare, transportation, soup kitchens… everything. Not everybody can afford a little vacation from work, and to move this regime we may need to shut things down for a while.
Online organizing is great and needed and it’s good that it’s happening. But I think of it as a “feature not a bug” that we are going to need to get our hands dirty side-by-side with our neighbors. They want us isolated on our screens because we’re easier to control as atomized individuals. Washing dishes with a neighbor who happens to be poor, or queer, or undocumented: that’s where solidarity comes from.
