Absolutely excellent piece! I have been pondering how independent Leftist content creators across platforms, including writers, editors, artists, informational video essayists and animators, and even memers and online forums moderators, could form a sort of international guild with local chapters to organize, collaborate, and cooperate via mutual aid. Maybe such a thing exists and I just haven't been invited to the club yet? We are stronger together!
Wow, that’s a pretty damn cool thought. The closest thing I know is probably the freelancers guild, which isn’t exactly identical but could provide a good model for a union of workers in these unconventional arrangements!
Thanks, I will check those out. I just know there must be a lot of us out there doing our own thing to effect change and struggling in isolation and I'm like, but why? We should be working together and supporting each other through this transition to a more humane system.
I agree with all your points, and unionization is one of our few points of leverage (albeit a powerful one), but if DC Democrats ever regain a trifecta majority, they must be forced to regulate corporations, decimate private equity (which destroys everything it touches: healthcare, nursing homes, the veterinarian industry, etc), tighten antitrust laws, and eliminate corporate tax loopholes.
Workers collectively have power, but Congressional Democrats can't continue to sidestep crucial legisation that protects workers and consumers.
Another informative, thoughtful, well-written piece Joshua- sometimes it feels like you take the jumbled & distracted thoughts out of my poor noggin & put them in logical, concise & very eloquent sentences for me- I really appreciate that lol! Thanks for the book recommendation too, planning to check it out
Every marginalized person needs a union. I’m trying to unionize my neighbors now that some of us have been offered temporary shelter so we can try to avoid further displacement. We don’t all like each other, but we agree that at the end of the day, we deserve as much stability as we can get. I’m trying to track down someone who’s room & belongings got given away by a nonprofit service provider when he went to jail recently.☹️

If there’s ever a group of people in Hollywood that needs a union now more than ever, it’s the CGI/Visual Effects Artists.
