I cannot overstate how much I love this article. Never before has my mind been shown the link between long-gone glory days and the appeal of the far right. I have seen the refusal/inability to adapt to changing times, but not the clinging and desperate longing for glory days long gone that precede the resistance to change. Me and my partner both work in the trades, and nearly weekly we are tell each other stories about one of our “old white male” coworkers claiming “you can’t joke about anything anymore”. But there's a biting intelligence to his humor you do not find in anything that Seinfeld says. I could see this in the show but there were certain things about it--the flatness, the emptiness of the people--that just sort of bores me, I guess?
Bojack Horseman has a lot of good lines, but one applicable here is "When you're wearing rose-colored glasses, all the red flags just look like flags."
