We’ve lost our capacity to express righteous outrage in this culture. Instead it’s all virtue signalling. I do believe that expressing outrage in the face of blatant acts of selfishness and narcissistic entitlement— especially when these acts occur at the expense of a child or anyone who is relatively vulnerable— is a skill each of us can develop.
And let’s note: it wasn’t anything this schmuck said. It was his actions. He earned every ounce of vitriol he’s getting.
I am an anarchist not because I believe that we are suddenly going to abandon capital and join bands of freely-associating compatriots.
I am an anarchist because the first principle is that coercive power is always eventually used by corrupt people in malign ways, so society’s goal should be to eliminate positions of coercive power.
Capitalism’s primary rule is that self-interest is all you need to create society.
My primary condition seems more accurate than theirs.
Good point, J.P. The “arc of history” does not just “bend toward justice.” Real everyday people…us…have to lasso that f**cker and drag it in the right direction! 💪🏼💪💪🏽💪🏿
The CEO is no doubt a major asshole. He blatantly ignored the fact that he made the kid cry. I saw a quick little smirk on his face as he looked right at the kid knowing he was making him cry. I feel sorry for this man's children. In fact, this is probably the exact kind of father that produced Donald Trump.
I heard and read articles that the exact opposite happened and he did apologize and gave the hat over to the boy. Doesn't excuse the behavior but let's not spread misinformation if that's the case.
The man did what he did in the moment. The moral outrage about that deed is the point here. The point is that although it may be easy to take candy from a baby, doing so is wrong. It is all well and good if after the fact, he discovered his conscience. The author is examining what led the CEO to think that "first come, first served" was a sufficient excuse for abusing his power to overwhelm a child. Just because you can take candy from a baby does not mean you should take candy from a baby. And you sure as shooting should not expect to be patted on the back for doing so.
I would argue that had the CEO not posted the self-serving and ethically wrong excuse for his behavior and simply and sincerely apologized, this would have never reached the height of outrage that it has.
Lots of folks seem to think that because I prefer avoiding misinformation, that means I think what the scumbag ceo did was fine. Please be advised, I hate him too and think he's a shitheel. We should not misinform the public though, regardless.
Yes, it says that the statement was false and he apologized and returned the hat and the child was also given another hat by the player. But the overall, post about what is occuring, especially in the US seems right on.
Where? I am gonna guess a PR team took over and started scrubbing all of this immediately. He took the hat and gave it to the woman next to him who shoved it in her purse. The ACT of that is the problem. I don't give a flying fuck whether he apologized later. Stealing from a child was his immediate reaction. Saying a simpering apology later is just to cover his own ass.
Yeah that's a PR spin if I've ever heard one. He snatched that hat from the kid with no qualms at all. Regardless of which statement is the true one, he is embarrassing. I would never, EVER snatch something from a child.
It’s as if he’s in a training video for first class bullies. First come, first served, if you snooze you lose, if you are not fast enough you don’t get the prize! Seems the kid had that hat FIRST! The age old schmuckdom kind of stuff. All about POWER grabs! If you don’t fight your way up someone else will get it. The Black Friday mentality. Punch your way in, one big MOSH pit of humanity clawing their way to the spoils- decency and a little selflessness seen as weakness. And then saying to anyone who OBJECTS to this greedy kind of behavior? - I’ll take you to court. To join the other litigious mil/billionaires out there who only think about $$$. Call these mega greedy people OUT, every time.

"If you were faster you would have had it" has been quoted as something the schmuck said - in addition to what he did.
Yes: schmuck (also see creep, bully, asshole... lots of words could apply here)
EDITED to add: READ what he posted... he also wrote this "If you were faster, you would have had it"
Stunning that some are defending or trying to defend this schmuck. Nothing to defend.
Isn't that apology a fake one?
The “apology” was probably written by a PR person or group
"if you were faster you would have had it"
What a guy!
Does he have kids?
Another story on this, some other elements shared about what happened.

I hadn't heard about this. Thanks for sharing.
This guy is the reason people sympathized with Luigi more than his target.
You don’t HAVE to be evil to run a company. Look at Ben and Jerry.

Wow! What a jerk! This guy has really absorbed the idea that might makes right.
And if we want to see their vision for the future for the rest of us, we can take a look at what's happening in Gaza and the West Bank.
Thanks for letting us know about this, JP.
Do you know about this upcoming event Draw the Line? https://dianavaneyk.substack.com/p/draw-the-line
I love it because it's international and it involves movements that are often at each other's throats.
It's a real chance of a first step towards solidarity. And we need solidarity if we're going to stare down people like this guy.

This is C Montgomery Burns shit.
This was exactly what I needed to read today (and for a long time before that). Thank you.
This will read a lot better when it's not platformed on Substack
