Thank you for writing this, Joshua. For several years in my twenties, I lived 10 minutes from Eaton Canyon. I have dozens of friends who have had to evacuate, and several who do not know if their homes are intact. It’s devastating.
These fires get worse every year, and it is hard to live under the threat of having your home destroyed—which is pretty much year-round now. I have three dogs and two potbellied pigs, so it isn't an easy evacuation for us, but nevertheless, we have a plan. I watch the scenes in LA and wonder if the next one will be me. Thanks for addressing this.
I agree, Joshua, and I just wrote a post in a similar vein.
I wish our movements would work together more. Just imagine: the people protesting against the genocide in Gaza marching with the environmental and social justice activists. Because they're all caused by the same group, and we need to realize this and seize our power to work together.
I’ve come to the realization that the climate deniers do in fact believe in climate change. They LOVE climate change. They are cheering for it. They tell people not to believe in it because they see it as one giant profit opportunity.
Thank you for this call to action. I share your vision and urgency and I too wrote a guide for how we can take practical steps towards organizing for a regenerative and sustainable future.
The southwest deserts have slowly been expanding over the last few million years. Building cities such as LA, Las Vegas and Phoenix is insane. The fun will get worse.
This is why I wrote my recent piece. We need to start on individual and small community solutions, because our leaders have failed us. From there, who knows, maybe we will be able to overthrow the system just by refusing to participate in it.
Octavia Butler's Earthseed philosophy of empathy and understanding and solidarity in Parable of the Sower is far more healthy than the predominant religions in North America are or could ever be.
Thanks for writing this as it’s difficult to appreciate or comprehend what is going on over there at the moment. Just BBC radio (just?!) and the now average slew of infotainment from whatever the app du jour is!
All good, except... Can we please stop referring to what we need to do as "war"? If we just get our solidary shit together, no war is needed. That's the end goal we need to reach. And if we don't get it together, no war can help us. Let's name the thing we need to do with a different word, so that people don't get confused and keep fighting instead of cooperating.
Thank you for this. I am so scared for what our future holds, especially given that I can’t name any revolutionary movements I have seen be created and sustained to combat these for-profit entities. The masses are struggling to get by financially, as well as to organize and demand a different reality.
How people have come to value something constructed like money over real humans is something I continuously fail to understand. This is frightening.
Join together now or perish alone at the hands of oligarchs and their sycophants. Eat the rich.
Thank you, Joshua! As always, it is poignant and beyond heartbreaking. It's so hard to remain hopeful in our world's dark and bleak days.
It’s undoubtedly hard. I don’t know about hope some days, but I definitely know about action, for whatever that’s worth.

Many people in Asheville and Chimney Rock, NC are still in tents😞
I hate, hate, hate that I have to agree with you😢
Yep😞 This doesn't end well for anyone.

Or sickeningly, they are religious zealots who are “waiting for the end of the world.”
Oh yes! That too. Haven’t thought about those folks in a while. The billionaires are using them for their zealotry.

Grateful someone has the nerve to publish this. Thank you.
Fantastic well articulated. I feel like I should have read Octavia by now. Top of list.
