This is excellent framing—calling it “a tunnel we might have to run through” captures the moment well. But the tunnel doesn't just pass through economic instability or fascist opportunism. It leads to the ontological and institutional failure of the neoliberal era, and if we don’t seize this rupture for transnational reinvention, we’ll just be running in circles.
The true battle isn’t just Trump, or tariffs, or the fracturing right. It’s the global consolidation of hegemonic control by a class of executives, investors, political elites, and media architects whose incentives are entirely extractive. The neoliberal elite cannot be reformed—they must be disempowered. That’s why any solution rooted purely in national action will fail. Nationalism is their terrain. Even the “left” gets captured there.
We need to bolster and reimagine international institutions and transnational solidarity networks. We need to develop pressure campaigns across borders—targeted not just at companies, but at the people behind them. The ones with names. Sanctions should be levied not just at rogue states, but:
Corporate oligarchs who undermine democracy,
Board members greenlighting exploitation,
Investors sustaining ecocidal markets,
Media elites laundering ideology for profit,
Politicians who block accountability mechanisms.
This is a call for international class warfare, but grounded in protective justice, not vengeance. The same way tax havens operate across borders, so too should movements for systemic accountability. And yes, the collapse of the current paradigm is a horrifying opportunity. But it's still an opportunity.
Wonderful, thoughtful and deeply insightful response to the madness going on! I hope people listen to your advice! Yes! We can all learn a lot from this ruling class struggle.
And it’s not too early to begin thinking about “alignment, not agreement” as a frame. We don’t need to ally ourselves with the worst, most violent elements of the MAGA coalition, but if we can find common cause with some people without demanding 100% lockstep agreement on everything?
Great piece as usual. Thank you so much for all your effort. To rally others, I think the alternative needs to be clearly presented.
Where are we going? What does it look like if we get it right? Not capitalism, not oligarchy, not extractive earth-killing economy, not scapegoating and vilifying
This is so true and well thought out, Thank You!
Like a 🪃 boomerang, when you throw it out, it comes back to you.
Find things that break the ice in face to face encounters with your neighbors.
We sink or swim Together
Maybe we all swim strong!!

We must act accordingly.

That’s power. That’s how change happens.
Well, put, Paul!

Hi Joshua, I agree and, as a matter of fact, just wrote a post that is like the opposite side of the coin expressing the opportunity available to us.
I don't usually do this, but want you to see for yourself. https://dianavaneyk.substack.com/p/times-of-dynamic-volatility
And we need to seize this opportunity!
We have a federal election coming up later this month in Canada, and are working hard to make sure Canada's version of Trump doesn't get elected.
I agree with this 💯percent, JP.
May we all see how deeply our fates are connected!
I loved this piece! Thanks 😊 J.P.!
